Weekly What?

button

Happy Saturday peeps!

Unfortunately for me it's not such a happy Saturday.  I seem to have caught the cold my mom had (and passed on to my dad) so I'm not feeling the greatest.  But it's cloudy and is supposed to be all day so I don't feel so bad about sitting around my house doing nothing but blogging, blog reading, and reading of books.

But let's get to the good stuff shall we?  It's time for the Weekly What with Allie, Jenn, and Ricci.  Check out the recap of my blog posts for the week and see what you missed!

Weigh-In Wednesday happened where I linked up with Erin and Alex and shared my, once again, surprising weigh in.  Why was it surprising?  Well you'll just have to check out my post to find out!

This week's Random Thursday topic was Top 3 Books Turned Movies.  The three books turned movies I shared aren't necessarily my top three, just three in general that I enjoyed.  I can never choose a favorite anything so trying to put three different books/movies into order of which I loved more would be super difficult for me.

The Pits and Peaks of my week were shared when I linked up with Allie and Brin.  This week I didn't have anything too bad to complain about or anything extremely exciting to share but if you want to find out what I did share check it out!

I only did three posts this week but I felt really on top of it and was happy with my blogging.  Hope to keep it going next week!

Enjoy your weekend friends.  Happy Easter!

Pit & Peak

Friday, it has certainly been too long since I saw you last!  It feels like it has been much longer than a week, let me tell you.  My readers are actually already sick of hearing how long this week has dragged on since I've been talking about it in every post.  But you're finally here and that's the important thing, right?

In addition to bringing me a new episode of Nikita to watch tonight you also bring the wonderfully awesome Pit & Peak link up with Allie and Brin.

button

I'm going to start off with the Pits because I want to end on a good note since it's Friday and all.

This week dragged by!  You probably knew that one was coming since I was bitching about it in every post I did this week.  It's true though.  I work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and every single one of them felt like they were the longest days of my life.

There's a reason why my work days dragged by this week though.  It was the first full week I went without being able to read a book when there was down time.  When you can't read a book and you aren't supposed to be on your phone (I am but secret agent style) there isn't much else to do at work when there is no work but look at the clock.  Last week we had some big wigs in taking a look at what we do and since they were in we haven't been allowed to have books or cell phones out.  Why?  Because we're overstaffed currently and apparently it makes it look worse that we're doing non-work related things while we're there.  I get that, I do, but is me sitting there staring a screen with no work to do any better?  At least I'm quietly reading to myself and not chatting it up all day, in my opinion.

Now, on to the good stuff!  Let's talk about the Peaks of my week.

The scale has been my friend the last two weeks.  I lost another 2.4 pounds on Wednesday without doing a damn thing.  Not going to lie, it made me smile and put me in a good mood for Wednesday.

One of my favorite shows Nashville came back after taking a couple of weeks off from new episodes.  This is only its first season but I hope it's around for a while.  I mentioned in Wednesday's post how I record it just so I can fast forward through the commercials because I don't have time to wait 3 minutes to find out what's going to happen next.  If the show was longer than an hour I would love it.  Even better would be if there wasn't a week in between episodes.  Seriously, I love the show.

I guess I only had two pits and two peaks this week.  Not much else I want to complain or get excited about so I'll leave it at that.  I hope everyone else had a great week!

Random Thursday - Top 3 Books Turned Movies

Happy Thursday everyone!  It's about time it showed its face.  Tuesday felt like it should have been Thursday to me so it's been a long time coming that Thursday actually got here.

With Thursday comes The Vampire Diaries, The Big Bang Theory, and Grey's Anatomy in addition to Random Thursday with Em, Lin, and Meg.  This week's topic is pretty awesome since I love to read and I love to watch movies (especially good ones over and over again).  I like it even more when books I've read are made into movies.  Sometimes the movies aren't as good as the books but sometimes the men cast in the movie more than make up for it.  Oh that's only me that thinks that?  Oh well! :)

Top three books turned movies...why only three??  I've found I have difficulties narrowing any kind of favorites list down to a certain number.  I'll give it my best shot though.

Note: these are not in order of which one I like better, this is simply a list of three books turned movies that I enjoyed.  I'm sure by reading all of the other Random Thursday posts I will find some that I forgot about that  I loved just as much (or more).

1.  The Twilight Saga --  There are many opinions on these books and movies.  Personally, I loved the books and have read them multiple times because of it.  I found the first two books before they became the "it" thing to read.  I couldn't put the first book down and finished it in one day.  You could say it sucked me in and wouldn't let me go until I finished it.  and then it was on to the next one and so on.  Definitely not the best thing for a college student since I put aside homework in favor of reading these books.  The movies are pretty well done in my opinion.  I'm one of those people that will usually always pick the book over the movie though so of course I like the books better.  But when I need to get my Twilight fix in a fast and visual way these movies do the trick.

2.  Charlie St. Cloud  --  When I found out there would be a movie made after the book I requested it immediately from my library.  I definitely like reading books before I see the movie that's made based on them.  And this one did not disappoint.  I really enjoyed the book.  It didn't hurt that there was a new cover on it featuring Zac Efron who played Charlie in the movie.  The movie did a pretty awesome job of following the book in my opinion.  Having Zac as the leading man definitely didn't hurt anything either!  (Can you say hottie?!)  I own the movie and have watched it multiple times.  I have also read the book twice.  I definitel recommend both to anyone looking for a good book turned movie!

3.  Harry Potter  --  I've read all of the Harry Potter books at least once, some more than once.  I'm even currently re-reading the series.  I would be farther along than just the second book had work not decided we are no longer allowed to read books during down time at work.  But anyways...I have only actually watched the first movie in its entirety.  That being said I still think the movies (from what I've seen of the others) do a really good job of bringing the books to life.  I plan to eventually see all of the HP movies.  Maybe even own them since I'm sure now that they've all been made there will be some big box set where you can buy them all on DVD.  Crazy to think that I own the first one (somewhere) on VHS.  Yeah, the series started that long ago already!  Makes me feel a little old.

I'm also a big fan of Nicholas Sparks books and movies.  Who doesn't love A Walk To Remember (hello Shane West!!), The Notebook, The Lucky One (again, hello Zac Efron!!), and Dear John?  I haven't actually read A Walk To Remember or The Notebook, probably because I saw the movies first.  I really want to see Safe Haven!  I read the book and honestly loved it until the end.  I wasn't a big fan of the ending but you can't love them all, right?  Has anyone seen Safe Haven?  What did you think of the movie?

This was a really fun post to write.  I enjoy talking about books and movies and it gets even better (usually) when books are made into movies.  Thanks ladies for the link up and a great topic!

Weigh-In Wednesday - Another Surprise

Hello friends!!  This week has been dragging by for me.  As in I can't believe it's only Wednesday because yesterday felt like it should have been Thursday already.  There are a couple of good things about this Wednesday though.

One, Nashville on ABC is back after taking a couple of weeks off from new episodes.  I've missed watching this show!  It is one of my absolute favorites these days.  it's on at 10/9c if anyone is interested in watching it, or needs a reminder of when it's on.  I always record it on my DVR and then start watching it around 9:30 (I'm in the central time zone if you didn't catch on to that.) so I can fast forward through the commercials.  Who has time for commercials during their favorite show?!  Not this girl!

Two, The Real World is starting a new season tonight on MTV.  another late night show, it's on at 10/9c.  Good thing my DVR can record two shows at one time!  I haven't really seen the commercials for this season (who watches commercials any more?) so I'm not really sure what to expect but hopefully it's a good season.

And finally three, it is Weigh-In Wednesday so I got my boot-tay out of bed and headed upstairs to the living room to weigh in on the Wii Fit.  I'm going to be honest; I didn't do a damn thing between last Wednesday and this morning.  In fact, I probably ate a lot more than I should have last night between dinner and finishing off a carton of ice cream I had bought myself.  (read: so no one else could eat it since I paid for it.)

I went into my weigh in expecting to see a gain or no change.  Imagine my surprise when I stepped onto the scale and it told me my BMI was lower than last week's (it always show you this first).  I'm no math whizz so I didn't think the difference in BMI was that much so when I clicked on the weight button to see the difference in pounds I was shocked to see that I had lost 2.4 pounds since last week.

Yeah, 2.4 pounds are gone and I didn't do anything to earn that loss.  Being honest with myself and with all of you, I feel a bit guilty about losing that and the 1.1 pounds from the week before while not working for it.  There are people like Lex who are busting their asses in the gym and watching what they eat, genuinely trying to lose weight and then there's me who has been so off of the weight loss wagon since the beginning of the month and I just lost 3.5 pounds in two weeks.  How is that fair?

The justice in it is that if I continue down this path that I am on of not trying I will gain that weight back (plus some if I'm not careful) while those people busting their asses to lose weight will see success.

But that's not what I have in mind for myself.  I have a lot of reasons why I don't want to stay the way I am but I'm not going to go into them in this post.  (Maybe another?)  Just know that I want to lose weight so I will be getting my butt back on track with going to the gym and eating better.  I have to.  I don't see another option because staying the way I am is not an option to me.

Anyways, here are my stats.

Initial Starting Weight (highest recorded weight): 205
January Starting Weight: 202.8
Last week's Weigh In (3/20/13): 204.6
Today, March 27: 202.2

Don't forget to head over to check out the blogs by Erin and Alex, our hosts for Weigh-In Wednesday!  (I cannot get the button to work today, sorry guys!)

Liebster Award Take Two

As I was checking my email this morning I came across an email from Lisa (she guest posted for me while I was on vacation) letting me know I was nominated for the Liebster Award.

This is actually my second (maybe even third) nomination so I'm going to refer you back to the post I did in January on it.  You can read my 11 random facts about me there.  But I will answer the questions Lisa asked below.

1. How did you meet your spouse/significant other? Well friends I am single like a Pringle and ready to mingle.  There have been a small handful of guys in my life since my last relationship ended over 2 years ago but nothing serious.  Still waiting for Mr. Right to come around.

2. What's your favorite place to vacation? The place I vacation to the most and truly enjoy is the great north woods of Wisconsin.  Here it is not uncommon to hear people describe what they did on the weekend as, "I went up north."  My family doesn't do as much camping as we would like but we still try to get up north a time or two in the summer or early fall.  I enjoy spending my time fishing with my dad or just hanging out at the camper reading a good book outside.  Camping is a great vacation for us because the whole family, Bo included, can enjoy it.

3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?  Meh I hate this question.  I never had a dream job in my head when I was younger.  I always said teacher just because it wasn't something too crazy and it was an answer that made people stop asking me what I wanted to be.

4. Snow: Love it or hate it?  Such a tough question!  I enjoy snowmobiling in the winter months so without snow I can't do that which means I want snow. I do not enjoy driving while it is snowing and road conditions aren't the greatest.  And times like now, when it should be warming up but yet we continue to have snow falling from the sky I'm not really a big fan.  So maybe it is safe to say I have a love/hate relationship with snow?

5. Favorite movie?  I can never pick just one favorite movie.  Right now I am loving Pitch Perfect.  I watched it twice in Maryland with Chelsea and since I bought a copy for myself on Saturday I have watched it three times.

6. Favorite TV show?  Oye!  Another tough question.  If you know me you know I have a DVR that I am usually in constant worry about not being able to record all of my shows.  I watch far too much TV!  Here's just a few shows I watch off the top of my head: NCIS, 90210, Teen Mom 2, The Vampire Diaries, Nikita, The Big Bang Theory, and Grey's Anatomy.

7. Favorite blog?  Jeez Lisa, tough questions! :)  I truly do not have a favorite blog.  But I recently discovered That's What She Read (way to go Allie with your in-post sponsor spot!) and have been following ever since.  Jen from That's What She Read is a gal after my own heart with her book reviews.  I love to read so I have been addicted to her book reviews because I am always looking for new books to read and it makes me want to get back to working on my own book reviews.

8. Where did you go to college and what made you decide on that particular school?  I attended three colleges total during my college career.  I decided on University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (UWSP) to receive my degree from because they offered an awesome program with University of Wisconsin - Marathon County (UWMC) that would allow me to stay at home and work part time while going to school full time.  Essentially, the professors from UWSP commuted to me rather than the other way around.  I never once had to attend classes on campus at UWSP which saved me a lot of money on gas and allowed me to work more hours because I had a 5 minute commute to work from school rather than a 30+ minute commute.

9. What do you do for a living?  I am currently in an entry level position where I do a lot of data entry.  I work with banks so I am keying amounts on checks, Money Orders, etc. as well as account and routing numbers from those documents as well.  That's the basics of my job.  I have a hard time explaining it to people...

10. Opinion on reality TV? Well if you noticed in my favorite TV shows list above I mentioned Teen Mom 2 so obviously I'm okay with reality TV.  I watch it and enjoy it.  Dancing With The Stars just started again on Monday so add another show to the list.

11. Do you prefer going to the gym or working out from home?  I prefer the gym.  I find it much more difficult to workout at home.  There are too many distractions for me (TV, books...) and even though I sometimes struggle to get myself to go the gym I find it easier to complete a whole workout at the gym because I can't just quit and go back to being a couch potato quite as easily.

Hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about me!  Thanks Lisa for nominating me.

Weigh-In Wednesday - Getting Back To It!

button

Happy first day of spring readers!!  It definitely doesn't feel like spring here in central Wisconsin, 4 degrees but with the wind chill it feels like -13 degrees.  Yikes, better make sure I bundle up today.

In other news, today is Weigh-In Wednesday so I am linking up with Erin and Alex to share my weigh in.

I was pleasantly surprised when my little Wii Fit person was a tiny bit smaller than last week.

Initial Starting Weight (highest recorded weight): 205
January Starting Weight: 202.8
Last Week's Weigh In (3/13/13): 205.7
Today, March 20: 204.6

That's a loss of 1.1 pounds from last week.  And I'm going to be honest, I didn't work for it.  The only thing different was I didn't return from a week long vacation where I truly at what I wanted when I wanted and had no concern for calorie counts of my meals.

I'd say my body has adjusted back to my normal bad eating habits.  Like I said, I didn't work for that loss so that means I ate whatever and drank however many sodas I wanted since last week Wednesday.

I was even more surprised to see a loss considering my Aunt Flo is visiting this week but a loss is a loss, right?

I will need to be getting back to the gym in order to continue making progress and getting myself out of the 200's for good.  I am sick of losing and gaining the same 5 pounds over and over.  I want to say goodbye to the 200's and never look back.  It's been a while since I was below 200 and I cannot wait to do it again.

The fact that I ordered compression capris from Old Navy and they're not at my house yet is being used as a way to rationalize the fact that I haven't gone to the gym yet since I've been home from Maryland.

Plain and simple, I need to get back to the gym and shouldn't be waiting for new pants to do it.  But even knowing that it's what I'm going to do.  So next week will begin my workouts again.

Food is next on my list to tackle but I'm not going to put that off until next week.  I need to start really tracking my eats to watch how many calories I'm consuming.  All the workouts in the world will not help me lose weight if I am still stuffing my face with food.

Well, to sum it up this week was a surprise loss on the scale which is being accredited to my body adjusting to not being fed like it's on vacation.  Nutrition and gym time will start playing a key factor in my weight loss effort in the near future.

Happy Hump Day friends!  We're almost through the worst of the week!

5 for Five...Errr 1 for Three?

I have to be the worst blogger ever.  I posted only twice last week when I really meant to post four times.

I have been planning my posts in my Maybooks planner but even that doesn't seem to help me actually sit down and write my posts.  I think a lot about posting but am actually struggling to post.  I need to get my act together!

Same goes for the gym...I think about going but am struggling to get there.  But that's a story for another day.

So this week for 5 for Five with Jenn and Jessica I decided to change it up a bit and focus on one goal for the remaining three days of the week.

PartyOfOne

There is one thing I can change about my routine that will more than likely help me post on a more regular basis and get back to getting to the gym.  It seems to be a topic buzzing around Twitter last night and this morning, or at least it is with Jenn and Allie. ;)

SLEEP!

You see Jenn and Allie are struggling to sleep, or stay sleeping.  I on the other hand am keeping myself up at night to watch something I have recorded on my DVR.  For a while it was to prevent the horrible "this show only partially recorded" type message.  But last night I didn't need to do that but I still finished watching last week's Grey's Anatomy (which I can't delete because my aunt asks me to record it for her and she hasn't been over to watch Grey's in weeks), watched all of last night's Teen Mom 2, and watched an old episode of The Big Bang Theory that I hadn't seen yet.

And it doesn't end there.  I then decided I would go to my room to lay in bed and start reading a book.  It was around 11pm by the time I did this.  And by the time I actually shut the light off and went to sleep it was after midnight.

Who does that?!  I was tired but I kept doing things other than going to sleep.  And now this morning I am paying for it.  I didn't want to get up and I am tired and not in a good mood because of it.

So, my goal for the next three days of the week are to get at least 8 hours of sleep.  If I get up when my alarm goes off this means going to bed no later than 11pm.  But I am definitely going to try going to bed earlier than that if I am feeling tired, which lately I have been.  (Probably doesn't help that I was up from around 8am Saturday until 6am Sunday morning...)

Help me out ladies, if  you see me tweeting and it's past my "bed time" call me out on it.  Send me to bed!

Random Thursday ~ Pet Peeves

I'm back for another Random Thursday with the lovely Em, Lin, and Meaghan to discuss my pet peeves!

Bad drivers...

You know the drivers that don't use their blinkers.  Um hello this is how you communicate with other people on the road, use them!

The drivers who don't understand how to use an on ramp.  You're supposed to be at speed with traffic on the highway by the time you're supposed to be merging onto the highway.

Same goes for those drivers that don't understand you're not supposed to slow down on the highway before getting to the off ramp (unless it's necessary to safely navigate the off ramp {sharp corners on off ramps}).

Slow drivers.  Enough said!

People that have no concept of what being on time means.

Unfortunately there are adults who are constantly late.

Even worse when those people that are late think that they can then make up that time at the end of the meeting or class.  I had a professor that showed up late and then thought he could hold us after class was supposed to end to make up for it.  This made me constantly feel rushed to make it to work on time following his class.

Even worse yet (when it comes to work) is those people that are late but then think they can still leave "on time".

People with no consideration for others.

If you're going to be late, call and have a good reason not some BS excuse.

The world does not revolve around you.  Sometimes you need to compromise!

Starting a book series only to learn all the books haven't been published yet.

Nothing worse than starting a series and being hooked on it then needing to wait for the next book to be published.  I'm looking at you Divergent trilogy!

So, that's all I got off the top of my head as I write this.  Had I thought about this in advance maybe I could have came up with more or some better ones.  Seems I have a problem with other people huh?  Speaking of which, common sense isn't common, that's another pet peeve.  Use your brains people!

Okay, enough for one night before you all hate me!

Weight In Wednesday - Return from Vacation Blues

Hello readers!  Long time no see huh?  Well fear not, I am baaaack!  Vacation was awesome.  Loved every minute of it and definitely did not want to come back.  Especially when the weather was 60 and sunny in Maryland as opposed to 40ish and rainy (then snow and cold again earlier this week).

Coming back to reality from vacation also means facing the scale.  I ate whatever I wanted on vacation whenever I wanted.  Yeah...definitely didn't help my weight loss journey.  Like, at all.

Up until this point I haven't been sharing my weight on the blog.  I've just been sticking to how many pounds I lost or gained.  Well, I've decided to suck it up and just come out with it.  Maybe I'll even follow in Halie's footsteps and post my full weight loss story on the blog some day.  But until then I'll just share with you my weight.  Dun, dun duuuun!

Initial Starting Weight (highest recorded weight): 205
January Starting Weight: 202.8
Last Weigh In, 2/20/13: 203.3
Today, March 13: 205.7

A gain of 2.4 pounds in 3 weeks.  And not only a gain but a gain that puts me back at my highest weight I have ever recorded.  Safe to say I tumbled off the wagon.  Again.  Super frustrating.  Actually it is beyond frustrating.  I've steadily gained weight since I graduated high school 5 years ago.  And I've been "trying" to lose weight every single one of those 5 years.  I have yet to really make progress.  And I have no one to blame but myself.

So, here I am once again committing to losing weight by leading a healthier lifestyle which means eating better foods and watching my portion sizes and being more active (read: going to the gym I pay $24/month for).

One of my goals for 2013 is to reach my goal weight of 150 pounds by December 31st.  I know I can reach this goal if I commit to the work that needs to be done.  No more excuses!

I'm always looking for support and encouragement so please leave some.  And I am more than happy to provide support and encouragement back to ya if you need it.

Oh!  I almost forgot, I am linking up for the first time with Erin and Alex for the first time for Weigh-In Wednesday.  Be sure to check them out!

Vegetarians and Meat Eaters: Sharing The Love

I'm still off on the East Coast enjoying my time with Chelsea until Saturday so I have another guest post for you from Lisa who blogs over at Lisa the Vegetarian (link to her blog below in her post).  She happened to stop by my blog thanks to one of my Weekly What? posts and graciously offered to guest post for me.  I love the topic we chose for her to write about because I think a lot of us can benefit from reading about how she has adapted to living with (and having a relationship with) someone who doesn't share her diet preferences.  I hope you enjoy her post as much as I did and that you show her some love!
***************************************************************

Hi everyone! My name is Lisa and I run the blog Lisa the Vegetarian where I write about food, fitness and the random adventures of life. I'd like to thank Amy for opening her blog to me today! As a quick introduction,
I'm a 29 year old software engineer from the Boston area, and I live with my boyfriend of almost 4 years -- a boyfriend who just so happens to be a meat eater.

Despite what some might think, being a vegetarian in a relationship with a non-vegetarian isn't as difficult as it might seem on paper. In fact, in the history of my life, I've never dated another vegetarian or had a close friend who was a vegetarian, nor is any member of my immediate family a vegetarian. You could say that I'm well acquainted with being the only person around who will opt not to eat meat! It's just the norm for me, and now that I've been a vegetarian for more than 16 years, I've found that it doesn't have to be a problem.

Of course it hasn't always been easy. When my boyfriend, D, and I first moved in together, we did find it to be a bit of a challenge trying to cook and plan dinners together every night. Before that, were were in the habit of going out to dinner on dates and having a home-cooked meal together every once in a while. It's a whole different ball game to be cooking every meal together while living in the same apartment. A lot of times, we would end up cooking two completely different meals, which was a pretty big hassle, especially considering the size of our kitchen (two people cannot under ANY circumstances be in the kitchen doing things at the same time).

Then we figured out a technique that made life a whole lot easier. Nowadays, here's what we do:

First, we come up with a basic meal idea that both of us will enjoy that night (pasta, Mexican, soup, etc.). Next we figure out how to make a veggie version out of it, as well as a meat version. If we both have the same base meal, we can switch up one or two ingredients to make the other person happy. Doing this makes things MUCH simpler and we don't have to spend much time in the kitchen at all.

One of our recent favorites that incorporates this idea is the homemade burrito bowl. I wrote about it here, but the basic idea is this: We saute some beef (or turkey) for him and separately, some soy chorizo (or tempeh) for me and use that as our protein base. Then the entire rest of the meal is shared between the two of us: tomatoes, lettuce, beans, cheese, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, etc. We use this same basic recipe for tacos and quesadillas as well, depending on what kind of Mexican meal we're in the mood for.

As another example, two nights ago we followed a similar principle, except we had omelettes. His included ham and cheese, while mine included cheese, tomatoes and some spices.

When we have burger night, we pull out the grill pan for both of us and cook up a beef burger as well as a veggie burger.

If we want to make our pastas more interesting, I cook up a soy sausage and he makes a regular sausage.

And every now and then, I can actually convince D to have one of my veggie concoctions. More often than not, he enjoys it! Vegetarian food is not all about bland tofu and flavorless foods. I don't know about you, but I LOVE big flavors and spice, so that's the way I make my meals. The soy chorizo I mentioned above is one of my favorite things to cook with because it is jam-packed with flavor. D even agrees that it tastes exactly like taco meat!

The moral of the story is this: a person's food preferences don't have to get in the way of relationships! I love getting creative in the kitchen, and it can be a fun challenge to create meals that are both veggie AND meat friendly. There are so many options out there and there's nothing wrong with exploring them all.

There are more recipes (plus lots of other fun stuff) over at my blog. Thanks for reading and thanks again to Amy!

Life by Lex has taken over!

Because I am away on vacation I lined up two awesome ladies to guest post for me.  Today I'm letting Lex from Life by Lex take over my blog.  She's here to share with you some tips she's learned on her weight loss journey that she thinks other would find useful since they were for her.  I hope you show her some love!  Thanks again Lex for doing this for me.
***************************************************************

Hey guys—I’m Lex from Life By Lex.  I’ll be guest posting today while Amy’s away!  When Amy asked me to guest post I was sort of at a loss for what to post about.  I thought about it and I decided to write about something that’s been a work in progress for me.  My weight loss.

I’ve been on my weight loss journey since about March 2012.  I had great successes and not so shining moments.  I’ve tried counting my calories, eating low carb and finally now I’m on weight watchers. I thought I’d write a post on some of the things I’ve learned while losing weight.

1. Its important to really like what you’re eating.  When I ate low carb, I did enjoy the meals that I was eating.. for a while.  But when you take out a whole macro nutrient group its hard to really be satisfied.  I would say I was never really hungry, but I did crave foods that I previously could have (read: pizza).  Additionally with food you really have to think about all areas.  Mainly when I decided to go low carb, I thought about Breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Never about snacks.  When your hungry for a snack—no one really wants some broccoli or peppers.  Maybe some fruit but that’s not acceptable in indication of low carb.  Finally, another consideration to think about is what’s going to happen when you go out with friends?  What can you order from the menu?  I wasn’t too embarrassed to order specialized meals like a burger on lettuce with broccoli instead of fries, but some people might have a hard time feeling comfortable with that.  Moral of the story—you have to think about everything when deciding what type of eating plan is right for you.

2. The effort you put into losing weight is the success you get out of it.  The more or less that you plan really does show in the success or lack of success that you have.  It sounds so simple but sometimes I struggle with this too.  After a long day of being at work, the gym, making dinner and doing grad school homework, sometimes I find it REALLY hard to motivate myself to pack my lunch and snacks for the next day.  I think ultimately I end up quilting myself into doing it because I am paying for weight watchers myself—and I feel as though if I don’t pack my lunch and make the most of my week that I’m somehow wasting my money.  However, packing my meals for work helps me feel more successful and prepared to deal with food situations that may be a little more challenging.  Oreos in the kitchen? I try first to listen to my body’s hunger cues, and then pick my snack before the cookies.  Once I eat the snack I’m usually not craving the cookies.

3.  Don’t skip the exercise.  When I was on low carb, I really didn’t exercise.  I did lose 30 pounds but I didn’t feel healthier.  I promise you after 1 month of consistently going to the gym a few days a week, you’ll be hooked on how you feel after your workouts.  I know the first few weeks will be tough.  You’ll want to quit the whole time.  Everything will be sore the next day, and you don’t think you can do it.   Working out I think is 100% mental.  Once you realize exactly how far or hard or long you can work out without thinking you’ll be amazed.  A pure Ah Ha! Moment! I had one of these moments about a month ago.  I’ve always wanted to be a runner.  I tried running in November.  I failed miserably.  In December I started doing Zumba and working out more regularly.  I didn’t dare run again in fear that I’d have a horrible time.  One day, I just got up and ran.  I ran until I couldn’t run any further.  I didn’t think about how I felt, how hard or easy it was I just ran.  It was awesome.  By the time I looked back down at my watch I had ran 2.20 Miles.  ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME? Where was that? Masked by my brain.  It was clearly all mental.  I could push myself further if I didn’t let my brain get in the way.

4. You have to WANT to lose weight.   It sounds silly but you can’t just want to lose weight to look better in clothes.. or to impress someone.  It’s hard to explain but it’s just the breaking point.  The point where you say, I literally cant do this anymore.  You hate your weight now, more than you love the taste of the unhealthy food, and the lounging on the couch that you’ve been doing.  Something just clicks and the motivation is there.  I’m not really sure how I got to my “breaking point” if you will but I really feel like it had a lot to do with reflecting on myself and where I wanted to be in a few years.  I realized being the way I was—I’d NEVER get to where I wanted to be.  It just clicked and I wanted more than anything to just get it off.  Like some kind of bug or disease. I wanted it off and I wanted it NOW.

5. You can’t be spot on ALL the time--- and you shouldn’t be.  I’ve learned over the past few months that there are going to be days when I eat more—and days when I eat less.  Days when I REALLY want dessert and days when I don’t.  The mentality that I’ve come to right now is that If my weight watchers points allow me to eat something—I eat it. Regardless of what it is.  If its ice cream and I have the points left I don’t stress about it.  I try REALLY hard not to use my 49 bonus points or my activity points, however sometimes I just need to.  Days when I’m at my max for points but I’d really like dessert—I let myself have it.  It may put me over for that day, but I really try to limit that to just once a week.  If I went over my points every single day, there’s no way I could lose weight.  But one day a week won’t kill my plans and will give me the satisfaction that I want.  I’ve read in many articles that its not so harmful if you have one bad meal—AS LONG AS you go back to watching what you’re eating the next snack or meal after.  Chips? Fries? Dessert? Not going to kill your intention if you have them once a week.  Sometimes a girls got to have her French fries…. Just sayin.

6. Water is key!   I drink a lot of water.  Andddd I mean a lot.  On a low day I drink about 66oz of water—on a high day, maybe 132 oz.  I used to HATE water.  Gag at the first sip.  Now its my go to.  My tips for drinking water is to get a water bottle that holds at least 4 glasses of water—that’s 32 oz of water.  AT LEAST.  Fill the whole thing up and carry it everywhere with you.  Challenge yourself to get through that one bottle a day.  Work up from there.  Spice it up with Myo, Dasani or crystal light flavor packets (my favorite is Myo Lemon aid, Dasani pink lemon aid or pineapple coconut, or crystal light peach).  Also if you’re a pop(soda?? I’m from Pittsburgh so its pop) love I highly suggest you try some sparkling flavored water—or as I call it fizz pop (no idea how this name came about because it doesn’t make any sense but it stuck and now that’s how my family knows my flavored water).  You still get the feeling of drinking pop (which I loveeee) and you get the benefits of water.  If buying the waters are too expensive for you ($0.75 per bottle 4 cups) I’d suggest purchasing a soda stream.  Its basically the same idea as fizzy pop but you make it yourself.  I have one of those at work and I’m in love!

I hope you’ve found my tips to be helpful, interesting, interesting, funny or helpful in some way.  Remember, I’m not a doctor, I am by no means telling you what you should and shouldn’t do to lose weight, but these are tips that I’ve come up with myself and found to be helpful to me.
